Toybox, funded by the Department of Education, is an early childhood programme aimed at improving the long-term outcomes for Traveller children and their families. The programme uses a home visiting approach with a focus on play to support children transition into education and advocacy strategies to support young Traveller children (birth to 4 years) and their families have access to high quality early education, formal schooling and family support.

Since Covid-19, Toybox have adapted their service to further develop the emotional health of the children in the programme. Having conducted a parent survey regarding Covid-19, feedback highlighted the impact of the pandemic on the child and family’s wellbeing.  Some of the issues faced by the children were due to: -

  • Changes in their routine

  • No access to school/friends at school

  • Limited movements around their home / area

  • Fear for family members becoming sick (older children)

Funding secured from the Clear project to deal with the impact of Covid-19 resulted in Toybox purchasing resources which families could use to explore their emotions together. Resources for children included a story book, a feelings board with discs and wooden people. These items were chosen to help families navigate through some of the emotions their children were encountering and help them find solutions together in their safe home environment.

Parent comments about using the emotions packs with their children include: -

“the resources were suitable for children of all ages”

” the bigger children helped the younger children talk about their feelings”

“my child said she was very sad not to be in school with friends now”

“my child opened up with the pack, I thought they were feeling ok”

As families continue to face Covid-19, Toybox have included some tips with examples on how to help your child manage their emotions.  Going outside, sharing books together or making your own feelings heard will support your child delve into both the positive and negative emotions they may encounter. Remember to continue to talk to your child about their feelings and emotions.  Also included are some activities parents could use to explore feelings with their children.
