Toybox Early Years is celebrating Human Rights Day today by launching a quilt which has been creatively designed and produced by many Traveller parents and children throughout Northern Ireland.

Shirley Gillespie, Toybox Team Leader, attended Romani Early Years Network (REYN) and training on Quality in Early Childhood Services with practitioners and agencies from across Europe. Toybox in partnership with parents and children was set up in 2003 across Northern Ireland to provide a rights-based outreach play service to Traveller families with children aged 0-4 years.

This unique and detailed plan has been developed through a meticulous process of: early development through the Department of Education’s Traveller Education Task Force; formal approval for the new service by the Association of Chief Executives for the five Education and Library Boards; and a comprehensive consultation process with Traveller parents, schools and a wide range of voluntary and statutory partner organisations.

Although the Delivery Plan has been agreed with the Department of Education as a statement of key priority areas, targets and actions for the 2013/2014 year, it is proposed to be a ‘living document’ subject to amendment as the new school year progresses from September 2013 onwards. TESS intends to be flexible and responsive to the changing needs of Traveller children, their families and their schools throughout the year.

In celebration of Human Rights Day on the 10th December 2012, Toybox launched "Tales of the Road", a family story book that will stimulate discussion and reflection amongst its readers. At the event Early Years also outlined the actions of the DE Traveller Education public consultation.

Education Minister, John O’Dowd, has launched a public consultation on proposals for the future of education provision for Traveller children. The Draft Traveller Child in Education Action Framework sets out proposals that will improve access to educational opportunities for children and families and give children the best possible start in life.
