Show Time! - Early Years Theatre Day

Published on: 16/06/2010

It was curtains up on Early Years' - the organisation for young children first ever Theatre Day. Hundreds of children, parents and staff from pre-school groups across the area took their seats in the Bawnacre Centre, Irvinestown to watch Replay Theatre Company's production of Mickey & Lionel.

Debra Doherty, Membership Officer for Early Years said:

"Early Years are always looking for events that inspire how young children learn through creativity and their own imagination. We hope our 'Theatre Day' has been a great opportunity to introduce children to theatre, and has been an exciting day both for them and the parents and staff that have come along today."

The show based on the fable of the Mouse & the Lion was specially devised for young children aged 3-7, and encourages them to learn through their own imagination and creativity. The play tells the story about two young boys, one of whom has just nervously started school; it introduces young children to the themes of friendship, building confidence and mutual understanding, and aims to encourage children's own visual literacy.

Eimear Henry, Replay Theatre Company's Executive Director said

"Developing a child's imagination and confidence is what this play aims to do and the interaction between stage and the children in the audience plays a vital role in their understanding. It is really exciting to have a play that touches the hearts and minds of young children in Northern Ireland. We were very pleased to have worked with Early Years to bring our production to so many of their pre-school group members. We hope that the shows success leads to future Arts and Theatre events aimed at educating and inspiring young children."
